You can apply for domestic cleaning jobs (private houses), commercial cleaning jobs (office buildings, shops or schools), or housekeeping jobs (hotels).
How to get the job

There are small and large cleaning companies that clean houses, offices, buildings or schools. The bigger cleaning agencies usually have a formal online application process, with vacant positions advertised on their website.
You may be able to apply in person to smaller cleaning companies.

You can also find ads for domestic/house cleaners for private individuals on websites like Gumtree.  If you apply for a private domestic cleaning position, make sure you feel comfortable working for them.  Your safety is more important than earning money.

Please be wise before you go to a stranger’s house. Tell a friend the name, telephone and address of where you are going, and what time you plan to be there. If you don’t feel comfortable, then do not take the position.

Common Duties

Common duties are emptying rubbish bins, vacuuming floors, wiping surface areas, cleaning toilets, and mopping tiles.

Advantages

Don’t need much English. You may not need a qualification (except for commercial cleaning where you might need to use industrial cleaning machinery).

Disadvantages

Physical labour. Not much chance to practice your English. Early morning starts or late evening shifts.  Many positions require own transport because you work at different locations on different days.  Some companies require an ABN (Australian Business Number) or own equipment.  Many cleaning jobs these days also require you to have previous cleaning work experience, especially commercial cleaning positions.

Early mornings. Late evenings. Weekends.

Qualifications

You may need police clearance, but the cleaning company may arrange this for you.
