There are 2 main ways to find work

Option 1

  • See advertised position.
  • Telephone/email the company to make sure the position is still available. Ask how to apply.
  • Email/post/take in person your Cover Letter and CV. Follow the instructions for applying.
  • Wait for a reply. Telephone them after 1-2 weeks if you haven’t heard anything. (This will show them that you are still interested.)

Advantage
It is easy to see what jobs are available from the comfort of your house. You can prepare for a position that you see advertised.

Disadvantage
Lots of competition. Now that everyone can see the advertised position, many more people will send in their CV. Also, many of the advertised positions are for qualified (rather than unqualified) positions. Lots of casual work is never advertised online.

Where to find advertised positions

  • Online job search agencies
  • Classified Ads websites
  • See posters on café/shop windows
  • Noticeboards in local libraries, shopping malls, universities, community centers

Option 2

  • Go to the individual business e.g. cafe/restaurant
  • Ask to speak to the manager
  • Give him/her your Cover Letter and CV.
  • Wait for a reply. Telephone them after 1-2 weeks if you haven’t heard anything. (This will show them that you are still interested.)

Advantage
Less competition. The manager can see your smiling face. You can make a positive impression.

Disadvantage
This process takes more energy. You have to visit lots of places. You need to have a good CV prepared and present yourself well.

Note
Many businesses will never advertise job vacancies. This is because they regularly receive CVs from eager job seekers. Therefore, option 2 is often the best way to find an unqualified job/casual work.

Where to drop off CVs
Think carefully where you would like to work and what type of job you would like to do. You want to make sure you can travel there easily. If you need to take public transport, you want to make sure that there are buses available.
